In 2016, the Nobel Prize in literature was awarded to Bob Dylan—the first musician ever to have won the prize for literature. The Nobel Committee granted him the prize for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."

Never mind that Bob Dylan won an Academy Award and 13 Grammys out of 40 nominations for his music. Never mind that he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for his songs. Bob Dylan always claimed he was, first and foremost, a poet, not a singer. In fact, there is a photo of him early in his career holding up a big sign that reads, “I can’t sing!” He may be right, but Rolling Stone Magazine doesn’t think so. It called Dylan the seventh best singer of all time. But that voice! The great American writer John Updike described Dylan’s as “a voice to scour a skillet with.”

So, don’t rush out and buy Dylan’s Christmas album entitled “Christmas in the Heart” for as one critic put it, it sure couldn’t be called “Christmas in the Voice.” That voice! Of all genres that seem to require a smooth perfectly pitched sound, it would be the Christmas album. Tony Bennett, Lena Horn, Michael Bublé, Adele, for sure. Not Dylan!

On behalf of Berkeley School of Theology, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. BST will be operating on modified hours beginning December 21, 2020 through January 4, 2020. Please feel free to reach out to the various offices through email or phone service and someone will respond to you as quickly as possible.

On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. PST, the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists will host a worship service via Zoom in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the disfellowshipping of four Bay Area congregations, including First Baptist Church of Berkeley and Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church of Oakland, by the American Baptist Churches of the West for their membership in AWAB.

The service of song, prayer and testimony will lift up the pain of the event, its ongoing significance, and the hope its memory calls forth.
