Example Project Ideas
- A Japanese American congregation in southern California seeks to gather stories from families and community members affected by 1942’s Executive Order 9066. Their proposal is to use the grant funds to research and document generational stories of Japanese American incarceration, the response from their local community then and now, and how their church has been shaped and called forward to serve in lieu of this history.
- A multi-ethnic Asian congregation in the Seattle area seeks to build bridges with another local church comprised mostly of people of African descent. They propose to use their grant funds to bring in a facilitator to help them engage in intercultural learning and growth, as well as taking first steps toward healing the wounds wrought from racial trauma in their community. They plan to document their process and their relational development as neighboring congregations.
- An Asian migrant church in the San Francisco Bay Area is experiencing the growing tension between the generations within their congregational family. The older generation seeks to preserve and pass down cultural traditions; the younger generation desires change and rapid acclimation to the dominant American culture. The church proposes to use their grant funds to foster intergenerational dialogue leading to a celebratory event that highlights stories, values, and hopes from both generations as they seek to serve God side by side.
- A multi-ethnic Asian congregation in Hawaii knows of several social impact ventures in their community that are spearheaded by native and indigenous persons. They propose to use their grant funds to learn more about these entrepreneurs, document and amplify their stories, and partner with them as a church through volunteerism, consumer support, and other means. Through the lens of decolonization, this church sees opportunities for their church to be the hands and feet of Jesus by coming alongside their community in ways that de-center themselves.
